Born in the English town of Huntingdon in 1973, Jamie first came to prominence as one half of Super_Collider, a collaborative effort with Chilean-born electronic musician Cristian Vogel. Formed in 1998, the duo spawned two science-funk albums, Head On (1999) and Raw Digits (2002). His first solo album Muddlin’ Gear, released in 2000, was still entrenched in his penchant for underground techno.
But it was his second solo effort, Multiply (2005), that proved to be his breakthrough album. Chockfull of uplifting soul and funk that evoke a return to the 1960s and 1970s, the record initially didn’t impress his bosses at Warp Records, home to electronic greats like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. But it went on to earn enthusiastic reviews, with the title track being used on the popular television series, Grey’s Anatomy, and another song A Little Bit More featured in a series of commercials.
His 2008 album, Jim, is a blend of funk, disco and gospel, not to mention secret chambers of poignant soul. Winner at the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best Pop/Rock Album, it paves the way for Compass (2010), his most eclectic album yet. With songs produced by Beck, it features guest performances from Feist, Gonzales, Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor and Wilco’s Pat Sansone.
Jamie will initiate a soul revival with numbers from his new and past albums – songs that are angry, sweet, hard and soul, often within the span of a single track.
