Kings of the slow burn, Ohio‐raised, Brooklyn‐based band The National have been creeping their way into hearts and minds for the better part of 10 years. Starting gradually with a couple of self released records, the band really hit their stride with 2005s Alligator – a record best known for the underground anthem ‘Mr November’.
They bettered the extremely high water mark set by this record however, when they unleashed their incendiary set Boxer in 2007. Such was the popularity and importance of this record that US President Barrack Obama began using ‘Fake Empire’ ‐ one of the album’s many stirring tracks for promotion during his presidential run. Even utilising it as background music during his victory rally in Chicago’s Grant Park.
The National’s latest album High Violet was largely self‐recorded in guitarist Aaron Dessner’s Victorian era home. This comfort and familiarity has seen them craft one of the finest records of 2010. It approximates something best described by the band themselves as the sound of “hot tar” or “loose wool”. If that seems alarmingly specific – it’s because it is. That’s just the way a band like this works. Attention to detail makes for important music and when it comes to importance you need look no further than The National.

“The National rarely miss” – Pitchfork
“This is what music must do, this is what music means. Anything else is froth.” – The Sunday Times
“This lot are fully grown up, colored-in and going overground. If the masses aren’t ready by now, they probably never will be” – NME
“People can’t say that we’re a flash in the pan. We’re more like a smudge in the bottom of the pan that you can’t get rid of” says vocalist Matt Berninger. There’s no doubt that this persistence has finally paid off, with tickets to their London Royal Albert Hall show last June selling out in 4 minutes, and Obama personally requesting a copy of High Violet.
With excitement continuing to build about this tenacious band, developed and refined over 10 years, there’s no doubting that their time has arrived. Civil Society is thrilled to welcome The National back to Australia for the Falls and Southbound festivals. Don’t miss your chance to see their tortured brooding grandeur in person.
