“Masterfully executed”

Herald Sun

“The Kamkar family are superstars.”
The Guardian

“Given their history, it is amazing that their music can possess so much exuberance and joie de vivre.”
Sydney Morning Herald

The Kamkars, an eight-piece Kurdish group from Iran who have received critical acclaim from The Guardian, The Independent, Washington Post, Herald Sun and the Sydney Morning Herald, are bound to have audiences and critics talking even more when they make their first visit to Australia later this month to perform at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, as well as performances in Melbourne and Brisbane.

The Kurdish cities and villages lie on high altitude mountainous plateaus that make everyday living a struggle made even more difficult by being in the crossroads of Middle East and the Greater Asia, the Arab world, an increasingly European Turkey and the former Soviet Republics to the north.

The Kamkars’ music is a unique fusion of virtuoso playing, on local acoustic instruments, yet with the most complex arrangements and compositions made possible by their classical training.

The Kamkars comprise nine family members including six brothers and two sisters playing instruments such as setars (long-necked lutes), tombaks (small drums), ouds and kamanchez (fiddles).

They have toured across Europe performing with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sweden’s Malmo Symphony Orchestra. In 2003 they performed at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony honoring Iranian human rights activist Shirin Ebadi.
