BIG DAY OUT 2008 & triple j is hyped to welcome a band not so much at the cutting edge as they are wielding the scissors that cut the damn thing in the first place. Precision-sharpened, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM are set to snip and slash their way into your summer.

From indie rocker to sitcom writer to one half of super-hot production team DFA, to label boss, to Grammy nominee, New Yorker James Murphy has worked up a golden touch. While DFA produced the likes of The Rapture and remixed the likes of N.E.R.D, Murphy was also dreaming up a band – LCD SOUNDSYSTEM’s first single Losing My Edge caused an electro-disco-punk-noise stir in 2002.

In the wash up Murphy was dubbed everything from the ultimate music geek to the coolest man on the planet… Both suspicions were confirmed with 2005’s Grammy-nominated album, LCD Soundsystem. Loud, envelope-pushing and equal parts smart and smart-arse, it spawned the music-lovers’ anthem Daft Punk is Playing at My House. “LCD have managed to be both underground hitmakers and bona fide album artists as easily as Murphy splices guitar noise and machine thump,” wrote Rolling Stone.

Last seen delivering raved-about (and raved to) DJ sets at BIG DAY OUT 2006, Murphy returns in 2008 with the LCD SOUNDSYSTEM band: guitarist Al Doyle (he of Hot Chip fame), bassist Phil Skarich, keyboardist Nancy Whang and drummer Pat Mahoney. Rolling Stone declared the group best on stage at this year’s Coachella fest: “The current six-person touring lineup is the most bloodthirsty live band around… propelling All My Friends and North American Scum far past their already-mind-blowing studio versions. Best show I’ve seen all year.”

At August’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, they brought clubbing to the great outdoors: “Tribulations and North American Scum seared through the park with just as much edge as they have in any club.” (Chart Attack, August 2007)

But don’t go thinkin’ LCD SOUNDSYSTEM is just about delirious dance. Summing up LCD’s second album, 2007’s Sound of Silver, the Sydney Morning Herald praised Murphy’s “depth of songwriting, including lyrics with more meat than just about any other beats merchant.” Whether dissecting American culture over beats hijacked from a German autobahn (North American Scum) or mining deep personal loss (Someone Great), Sound of Silver works the physical and the emotional.

Now it’s your chance to work it. As the over-excited folk at The Enmore like to say: LCD SOUNDSYSTEM is playing at our house!
